Artist's Statement

The figure has the power to capture mood and emotion, the complexities and subtleties of human experience. Our lives are not simple; they are, more often, somber, contemplative, a process of integrating our inner and outer experiences.

For several years, I have been working almost exclusively with acrylic and found wood. Acrylic dries quickly, which allows me to spontaneously layer my thoughts and feelings until I find a sense of balance in the image. I like to allow the raw, weathered and sometimes flawed quality of the wood to come through. I have learned that there is a certain beauty in accepting and working with these imperfections. The fit between the image and the material is very important to me. I work towards a union between the two. Bringing together the warm, sacred, and imperfect qualities of the wood with radiant yet somber figures becomes a way of exploring life’s duality and the human experience. Creating meaning from objects that have been discarded is a very gratifying, and symbolic process.

Although I believe that all art is a unique reflection of the artist’s being, it is my hope that others will also connect with these images in a way that is both personal and universal.
